Don Giovanni / The Metropolitan Opera (debut)

She is a star: Marina Rebeka, a handsome Latvian soprano making her Met debut. Her voice is bright and flexible and for all I know she can act—we will have to await another appearance. She certainly nailed Anna’s arias.

Rebeka has a powerful voice with a secure technique and blazing high notes. She threw herself into “Or sai chi l’onore” with aplomb and sang “Non mi dir” with the correct amount of tenderness and self-pity. The center of the voice is rich and big with clear coloraturas. She has good stage presence and acts convincingly. Her duet with Vargas in the first act was beautifully sung.

Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka was making her Met debut in this production as Donna Anna. Her gleaming top notes blazed in ‘Non mi dir’, with good runs and a clean, rapier-like attack…

New York Times, Anthony Tommasini
In her Met debut the striking Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka was a winning Donna Anna, singing with a clear, bright sound and cool intensity.
